Recently, there was a rash of WordPress blogs that were hacked into. There were thousands of blogs affected, and they mainly seem to be GoDaddy & Network Solutions customers, two of the bigger players in the game. There were other platforms targeted, but WordPress seems to have been the biggest target by far. The malware seems to have caused a redirect to an attack site that in many cases installed a virus on the users computer. While there seem to be several versions of this same attack in recent weeks, they share the common theme of altering .php files and injecting the damaging code. So far, the recommendations have been to change all passwords and security keys, delete any users that are not admin (changing your username from ‘admin’ is also recommended), and installing security based plugins for WordPress like Exploit Scanner and others. Some of the signs to watch out for are a Dashboard that looks like it has been changed to mostly text, or a warning from an antivirus program stating the website is potentially unsafe!
